Checking On My Wrist Implant PDF Print E-mail

There has been a great deal of advancement in design and technology of new wrist joints. However with any joint replacement implant, they do not last forever.

It is likely you will have already discussed implant longevity with your doctor, but there is no general timeline of when implant complications may occur. You may enjoy many years with your implant or only a short time before problems develop.

The main reason wrist implants problems occur is from loosening of the implant from the bone that surrounds it. When this happens, the wrist joint begins to hurt and eventually the pain may become so bad that another operation may be needed. This will be a decision that you will make in consultation with your physician.

Other indicators of wrist implant complications include:

  • Dislocation of the wrist
  • Sudden changes in range of motion and temperature of the skin
  • Change in the length of the wrist
  • Changes in the position of the wrist when compared to the hand and arm.

Call your doctor if you notice any of these signs, as well as increased tenderness, redness or swelling in the wrist joint area. Your doctor will most likely X-ray the wrist joint to determine what further steps need to be taken.
