Dr. Nicholas Abidi has been performing arthroscopy as well as hip, knee and ankle joint replacements, shoulder and foot and ankle surgery in Santa Cruz County and the South Bay since 2000. His medical training was in Philadelphia at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, during which time he also completed a Howard Hughes Fellowship in Molecular Biology at the National Institute of Health. He completed his residency training was at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia and fellowship in Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle surgery at the University of Pittsburgh.
After his fellowship training, Dr Abidi returned to Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia as an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the renowned Rothman Institute from 1997 through 2000. During this time, he was director of medical education instructing medical students and training orthopaedic residents. He continues educating physicians at national meetings and is active on national committees, including the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). Dr. Abidi also is editor of many peer-reviewed orthopaedic surgery publications.
His practice focuses on total joint replacements of the lower extremity as well as reconstructive surgery of complicated foot and ankle conditions. In addition, he provides care for sports injuries and fractures. He routinely performs the minimally invasive anterior approach total hip replacement (ASI), and partial or total knee replacements, as well as total ankle replacement.
Locally, Dr. Abidi has served as the president of the Santa Cruz Medical Society and enjoys volunteering as track physician for Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Throughout the year, he and his SCOI colleagues provide pre-participation physicals for area high school and club sport athletes.
