Living with Arthritis: Help at Home With Daily Tasks Print E-mail

Living with arthritis can be a very difficult thing to do. Although often taken for granted, the daily task of dressing can pose significant challenges for people with arthritis. Stiffness and reduced flexibility can make clothing difficult or impossible to manage. Garments that slip over the head or those with zippers can be especially challenging.

Fortunately, there are new clothing designs and accessories that can make dressing less difficult for individuals dealing with arthritis.

  • Garments with front openings can eliminate many complications.
  • Hook and loop fasteners can replace buttons.
  • When hands are stiff, a decorative tab added to zippers can make them much easier to manipulate and will increase independence.

Many new clothing manufacturers and designers are beginning to create clothing adapted to the needs of people with arthritis and other conditions. With these advances, dressing need not be a monumental undertaking.

Likewise, manufacturers are designing new innovations to make everyday tasks around the house a bit easier.

For individuals living with arthritis, stiffness coupled with decreased strength and flexibility can turn simple tasks into complicated chores. However, there are many steps people with arthritis and their families can take to make the home a much more comfortable place to be.

  • Accessories can be added to doorknobs for easier turning.
  • Rotary lamp switches can be converted to require a touch to the lamp base rather than twisting a small knob switch.
  • Handrails can make inclines and steps much easier to navigate.

With thoughtful assessment of needs and abilities, many household tasks can once again be again be taken in stride.
